Care workforce Phase Two Enhanced Care/Complex Care Worker Roles

Skills for Care and DHSC are working on phase two of the Care Workforce Pathway, and are looking to speak to providers across a range of care and support specialisms.

Skills for Care and the Department Health & Social Care are working on the phase 2 of the new care workforce pathway. We are looking to speak to providers across a range of specialisms, including support / care for;

  • People with a Learning Disability

  • People with sensory impairments / total communication needs

  • Autistic people

  • People at their End of Life

  • People with mental ill health – mental health specialist services

  • People living with dementia.

  • Older people with multiple co-morbidities /Frailty

  • Reablement and rehabilitation

We are particularly thinking about staff who work above ‘category B’ (Care and support worker – All the existing categories are described at the link above) and demonstrate their skills, knowledge, and behaviours above this level. It’s not formally recognised yet as a role in the pathway though many organisations and people do work with additional activities and responsibility whether this is officially named as a role within organisations or not.

There is more information below on this and the research request, or if you just want to chat or to know more, or if you have material to share you can let  me and my colleague Rachel Yates Hoyles know. I really hope this next phase of the workforce is something you would like to contribute to.

More information on the opportunity.

Care Workforce Pathway Phase 2 Enhanced role / Enhanced level of care

Skills for Care and the DHSC are working in partnership on the development of a new care workforce pathway for adult social care. The pathway will reflect the skills, behaviours and expertise needed to deliver high-quality, personalised, and compassionate care and support.

Phase 1 of the care workforce pathway, which focuses on care and support worker roles, has recently been published.  Phase 2 will focus on Registered Manager, Deputy Manager, Personal Assistant and Enhanced Care/Complex Care Worker roles.

For the Enhanced Care/Complex Care Worker role, there’s a recognition that this isn’t an existing formal role. We know some areas are piloting new enhanced roles and / or care workers are undertaking activity that’s above the Category B in the phase 1 of the pathway.

Skills for Care has commissioned York Consulting research organisation to carry out qualitative interviews with organisations and/or local systems across a range of practice specialisms, to undertake a deep dive into what skills, knowledge and behaviours people have/need who are undertaking an enhanced role or an enhanced level of care and support. We expect the conversations to last between about 20-30 minutes, either as an individual or together with your colleagues and wondered whether you would be willing to have a conversation (probably by phone or video) with a researcher to share your thoughts.

Please contact Rachel Walker to arrange permission to share your contact details for York Consulting to contact you and arrange a convenient date and time or if you have any questions.
